Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox® is a purified form of a protein that comes from bacteria, known as Botulinum toxin type A. When Dr. Lerner injects it into any muscle, the muscle relaxes, allowing for various results, from wrinkle relief to migraine relief.

What does Botox treat?

Botox is best known for its cosmetic uses. With Botox, Dr. Lerner can artistically soften, reduce, or eliminate dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles caused by muscle movements.

Dr. Lerner is one of the only Family Medicine physicians on the Windward side with advanced training and experience

using Botox to treat:

  • Chronic headaches and migraines
  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) and headaches associated with grinding teeth
  • Neck pain from spasm or injury.
  • Spasticity and contractures from stroke, cerebral palsy
  • These special non-cosmetic 'medical' uses for Botox are usually covered by insurance, even No-Fault

Wrinkles

Botox typically softens, reduces, and eliminate wrinkles for three to four months at a time. Botox targets dynamic wrinkles such as:

  • Lines across the forehead and between the eyes
  • Smile lines on the face and frown lines around the lips
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes

After you get Botox injections for wrinkles, you’ll notice results within seven days. Results should last about three months.

Chronic migraines

Chronic migraine headaches occur more than 15 days a month, with each headache lasting at least four hours. To treat current migraines and prevent future episodes, Dr. Lerner injects Botox in multiple scalp and neck muscles associated with your headaches.

Dr Lerner may be able to assume care of your Botox treatments for headaches if your regular physician has moved.

For the best results, it’s recommended to get Botox injections once every 12 weeks.

TMJ / Grinding

Botox relaxes the muscles that bite down or move the jaw, thereby alleviating jaw pain and tension headaches from grinding your teeth.

After injecting Botox into specific jaw muscles, you will notice relief within 1 week.

How long does Botox treatment take?

Botox treatment is very quick. Typically, it only takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete. During treatment, the injections feel like a pinch.
